Frequently Asked Questions about Roof Safety Systems

Roof Safety Systems are a selection of equipment designed, engineered and installed to provide access to roof areas for maintenance of the roof or plant/equipment on the roof. Roof Safety Systems should prevent or minimise injury from slips, trips, and falls and implement the highest control measures practicable. All roof safety systems should comply with Australian Standards (Particularly AS1891-2009  & AS1657-2013 ) as well as relevant Codes of Practice.

Roof Safety Systems must be provided by anyone who is responsible for persons working at a height on a roof. This means building owners or persons responsible for the safety of visitors, workers or contractors must provide a safe method of access to the roof area for maintenance of the roof (and guttering) or to access equipment such as air conditioning units that may be located on the roof.

Work Health & Safety Regulations 2011 – Part 4.4, Clause 78

  1. A person conducting business or undertaking at a workplace must manage, in accordance with part 3.1, risks to health and safety associated with a fall by a person from one level to another that is reasonably likely to cause injury to the person or any other person.

If you already have a roof safety system installed or have recently engaged someone to install a roof safety system it is important to ensure that your system is safe and complaint. Ask your installer to provide a certificate of compliance when they complete the installation. Even better, contact our client support team and get your system booked in for re-certification or auditing.

We have a team of roof safety experts that are qualified to attend and ensure that your roof safety systems are in top condition and maintain compliance with the current Australian Standards.

Roof Safety Systems vary enormously in cost from $500.00 (a simple ladder bracket and signage) through to tens (even hundreds) of thousands of dollars for custom designed roof safety systems for complex or large scale buildings with specific access requirements.

If you are unsure about your roof safety systems requirements or would like to check if you need a roof safety system, get in contact with one of our consultants and they can work with you to ensure that you have a safe, compliant system.
