Frequently Asked Questions about Roof Safety Systems

Roof Safety Systems are a selection of equipment designed, engineered and installed to provide access to roof areas for maintenance of the roof or plant/equipment on the roof. Roof Safety Systems should prevent or minimise injury from slips, trips, and falls and implement the highest control measures practicable. All roof safety systems should comply with Australian Standards (Particularly AS1891-2009  & AS1657-2013 ) as well as relevant Codes of Practice.

Roof Safety Systems must be provided by anyone who is responsible for persons working at a height on a roof. This means building owners or persons responsible for the safety of visitors, workers or contractors must provide a safe method of access to the roof area for maintenance of the roof (and guttering) or to access equipment such as air conditioning units that may be located on the roof.

Work Health & Safety Regulations 2011 – Part 4.4, Clause 78

  1. A person conducting business or undertaking at a workplace must manage, in accordance with part 3.1, risks to health and safety associated with a fall by a person from one level to another that is reasonably likely to cause injury to the person or any other person.
